Mental Math Tricks
Fast mental arithmetic isn't magic; it's a set of shortcuts that turn hard sums into easy ones. Learn the tricks below, then use the 60-Second Sprint above to practise them under a little time pressure.
The Sprint starts with small additions and gets harder after every four correct answers, so you'll get to use every trick on this page.
Eight tricks worth learning
- Add in parts: 47 + 38 = 47 + 30 + 8 = 85.
- Round and adjust: 63 − 29 = 63 − 30 + 1 = 34.
- Multiply by 5: multiply by 10 and halve – 5 × 46 = 230.
- Multiply by 9: multiply by 10 and subtract – 9 × 7 = 70 − 7 = 63.
- Multiply by 11 (two digits): 11 × 34 → 3, 3+4, 4 = 374.
- Double and halve: 16 × 25 = 8 × 50 = 400.
- Divide by reversing tables: 56 ÷ 8 – which number times 8 is 56?
- Square numbers ending in 5: 35² → 3 × 4 = 12, then 25 → 1225.
Make the tricks automatic
A trick only saves time if you don't have to think about it. Practise one or two at a time, play a Sprint, and notice when you used them. After a week the shortcuts start happening by themselves.
